Birmingham Botanical Gardens & Zoo

 

Boasting around 68-acres, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens is an impressive living museum featuring over twenty unique gardens such as rose gardens and Japanese gardens, custom outdoor sculptures, and miles of scenic walking trails. The Gardens include the country's largest horticulture library as well as conservatories and auditorium, highlighted by multiple education programs that attract nearly 400,000 visitors a year.

 

Adjacent to The Gardens is The Birmingham Zoo, the 122-acre zoo-park that is home to nearly a thousand animals and representing over 200 species. The zoo features many entertaining and educational exhibits, appealing to the nearly half-a-million yearly visitors on average to the zoo.

Samford University

 

Located 6 miles north from our hotel is one of the oldest schools in the United States, Samford University. Between the undergrad and graduate students, this private Christian college has a total student body of around 5,000 a year who predominantly study in Samford's schools of business or health care. Samford is the largest private school in the state of Alabama and is very active in the community by hosting events and sponsoring over 125 different campus clubs and varsity sports teams at the school.

Barber Motorsports

 

Car and auto-enthusiasts visiting Birmingham, AL will not want to miss out on a visit to the Barber Motorsports Museum, home to the largest collection of Lotus cars and over 1,200 of the most coveted vintage and special-interest motorcycles and racecars in the world. With some pieces dating back over 100 years and ranging from mass-production to rare racing machines, this museum is considered to be the largest motorcycle museum in the world.

 

Lead-heavy drivers and adventure-seekers will enjoy visiting the Motorsports Park, the 740 acre racing facility that includes a 2.3 mile track which hosts races and events such as Grand-Am, Vintage Racing Series, AMA Superbike, the Honda Grand Prix, and MotoAmerica. The Park is home to the North American Porsche Driving School, the Kevin Schwantz Suzuki School, among many other programs and special events.

University of Alabama at Birmingham

 

Located in the Five Points area south of downtown is the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the public research university and academic medical facility that is the largest employer in the state of Alabama. The campus spans around 275 acres with a student body of around 18,600 and employs over 19,000 at the university and in the health system. The UAB Health System is one of the largest academic medical centers in the country and sponsors the residency programs in the college's medical education specialties. UAB is regularly ranked as one of the top research universities in the world for health and is internationally recognized for its business education programs.

 

Vulcan Park and Museum

 

Located east of central Birmingham near UA-Band standing 56-feet tall on a 123-foot pedestal, the Vulcan Park Statue is a symbol of Birmingham, Alabama's industrial roots as an iron and steel town. The statue is of the Roman god of fire and forge, Vulcan, and overlooks the Birmingham skyline. It is the world's largest iron statue, displayed on ten acres of landscaped green-space where many events are hosted. The museum features interactive outdoor and indoor exhibits and displays highlighting the region's metal-smith ancestry and also houses the official Information and Welcome Center for Birmingham.
