Merlin Butterfly Sanctuary

The sanctuary is a conservation effort in collaboration with the International Union of the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It aims to increase the native butterfly population and educate visitors on their life cycles and classifications.

Exploring the Sanctuary

The Merlin Butterfly Sanctuary is the second of the resort's environmental efforts. Its first, the Reef Education Center, offers a look below the water's surface and suggestions on how to prevent further damage. The sanctuary is filled with host plants for caterpillars and nectar plants for butterflies to feed on. Minimal netting allows the butterflies to come and go freely, and an enclosed area serves as a breeding space.

The sanctuary can be explored independently or by joining a daily guided tour. Kids also receive a butterfly observation journal to remember their visit.

Non-resort guests can explore the butterfly sanctuary for a small charge. Please refer to Visitor Packages for more information.

Conservation Efforts

Butterflies are essential pollinators for a variety of flowering plants and crops, making them critical to Thailand's ecosystem. Yet, Phuket's native butterfly population is continuously declining. Widespread use of pesticides and overdevelopment due to farming, housing and tourism has compromised the essential habitat butterflies need to survive.
