Historical Niagara

Fort George
Overlooking the Niagara River, Fort George was built between 1796 and 1802. This fortification served as the headquarters for the Centre Division of the British Army during the War of 1812 and played a pivotal role in the defense of Upper Canada. Fort George saw action during the Battle of Queenston Heights, was destroyed and captured by the Americans during the Battle of Fort George, and was reclaimed by the British seven months later.

Today, visitors to Fort George National Historic Site can step back in time to experience the early military history of Niagara. Tour through 19th-century military architecture including the Blockhouses, Officers' Quarters, Artificers Shop and Guard House. Make sure to visit the powder magazine, which is the only building to have survived the Battle of Fort George and is the oldest military building in Ontario today!

Laura Secord Homestead
Home of Canada's Most Famous Heroine
During the war of 1812, a brave woman set out on a perilous journey in the service of her country and stepped forever into the history and folklore of Niagara. Travel back in time to the lovingly restored Laura Secord Homestead and be enchanted by stories of her adventures and surroundings as interpreted by authentically costumed guides.

McFarland House
This Georgian Styled house was built in 1800 by John McFarland and his sons, on land granted by the Crown. It is one of the oldest surviving structures in the Niagara District. During the War of 1812, it was being used as a hospital by both British and American Forces. Costumed interpreters provide guided tours of this historic home throughout the day and host several special events during the holiday season.

Old Fort Erie
Travel to the edge of the Niagara River in Fort Erie to experience the sights and sounds of a fort under siege at this War of 1812 National Historic Site. Join British, First Nations, and American soldiers on a tour of the grounds and learn more about Niagara's pivotal role in the War of 1812. Step back in time and relive history with daily tours, musket demonstrations and the annual Siege of Old Fort Erie Re-enactment.

Mackenzie Printery
Discover 500 years of printing technology inside the restored home of publisher, rebellion leader, and Toronto's first mayor, William Lyon Mackenzie.
Located in the quaint village of Queenston, the Mackenzie Printery offers visitors a hands-on experience with a working linotype and eight operating heritage presses. Don't miss the rare Louis Roy Press, the oldest printing press in Canada and one of the few original wooden presses remaining in the world.

The Battle of Chippawa
The Battle of Chippawa, fought on July 5th, 1814, was the opening engagement of the Niagara campaign of 1814, the longest and bloodiest military operation of the War of 1812.

Niagara Parks acquired the site of the Battle of Chippawa in 1995 and has preserved 121 hectares (300 acres) of this pristine battlefield, the last remaining site from the War of 1812. A self-guided walking tour helps retrace the events of the battle.
