Previous Artist-in-Residence

In the years since its inception in 2016, The Cornhusker's Artist-in-Residence program is an example of a hotel taking their dedication to the local community above and beyond traditional expectations.

First Artist-In-Residence, Margaret Berry

Local artist Margaret Berry, a lifelong Nebraskan specializing in encaustic painting and mixed media work, was named The Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel's first Artist-In-Residence. In this capacity, she interacted with guests and demonstrated her art process, both in the lobby and in her studio.

Margaret was actively involved in the Lincoln community; she previously served as the executive director of the Lincoln Arts Council, was the first education director at the Lux Center for the Arts and a member of the Urban Design Committee for the City of Lincoln.

Margaret practices an ancient painting tradition that melds beeswax with dammar resin and pigment. Used by the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians, the process called "encaustic" means to burn it with fire. Margaret applies a variety of torches to fuse wax layers of dreamy color and bold texture. She also incorporates oil paint, collage and photography into her work. Her zeal for encaustic has led her to exhibit coast-to-coast, teach innovative Hot Wax/CoolArt™ workshops across the U.S. and produce professional teaching videos.

Second Artist-In-Residence, Nicole Battelle Van Hook

Paper sculpture artist, Nicole Battelle Van Hook, specializes in paper couture for photo shoots, performances and sculptures. Nicole was named the second Artist-In-Residence at The Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel. As part of this position, she hosted a few unique and artistic First Friday events for the hotel guests. During her residency, she wrote and costumed a paper ballet performed in the atrium for hotel guests. She worked closely with the hotel's Project SEARCH interns to create art.

Third Artist-In-Residence, Tom Meyers

Tom Meyers, born in Omaha, Nebraska, named the hotel's third Artist-in-Residence, specialized in painting. Throughout his residency, Tom hosted several workshops, crafting interactive pieces for guests/local patrons to learn and create. Tom illustrated custom football and greeting cards for the hotel. While passing by, you may have even heard a few of The Beatles songs coming from his studio.

The second of eight siblings, Tom showed his artistic talents at an early age. Drawing and painting came easily to him, but he failed to grasp the value of instruction and practice. Not until college did he begin to realize that talent can be developed and raised.

Ten years with Jay Tschetter's crew at Images in Brick, Tom focused on scale and precision. Chalkboard artwork taught him the value of repetition and long, extended sessions of drawing and downtown Lincoln and Omaha restaurants, such as Old Chicago. Tom bounces between fine art, commercial signage and menu boards. He says he has felt like a real artist for only the last few years.
