Project SEARCH

Project SEARCH, which provides on-site classroom accommodations and real-life work experiences for youth with developmental disabilities.

Host Project SEARCH Classroom

The Cornhusker Hotel provides an on-site Project SEARCH classroom throughout the school year. Project SEARCH Program allows real-life work experience combined with training in employability and independent living skills to help young adults with disabilities make successful transitions from school to productive adult life.

Program Curriculum

Through a series of three targeted internships, the interns acquire competitive, marketable and transferable skills to enable them to apply for a related position. The Cornhusker has mentors that interact with the interns daily. Interns will acquire the core skills necessary to be hired in an entry-level position at The Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel or in the Lincoln community.

Program Overview

Project SEARCH began in 1996 at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Concerned with a high turnover rate, Erin Riehle, the Director of the Emergency Department, wondered if people with disabilities could fill the entry-level jobs she had. Cincinnati Children's along with the Hamilton County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities and the Great Oaks Institute of Technology and Career Development turned the idea of filling a handful of jobs into a comprehensive program model called Project SEARCH. Project SEARCH has grown from one original program to over 520 across 45 states and nine countries.
