The Most Beautiful Café in the World

View of New York Café from Boscolo Budapest

So much more than a hotel restaurant, the New York Café is considered to be one of the most important places to visit in Budapest. Elected the "Most Beautiful Café in the World" in 2011, it is a stunning dining destination showcasing exquisite Italian Renaissance-style architecture, a rich history and authentic Hungarian cuisine.

The Original Legend of the Key

In 1894 Steuer Sándor, the first leaseholder of New York Café, opened the café's doors to the public. This illustrious event was attended by all of the luminaries of contemporary art and culture at the time, with guests including Molnár Ferenc, the renowned writer, journalist, and author of the Boys of Pál Street, which he penned at a table in the café.

The legend goes on to say that guests were in such high spirits that a throng of jolly journalists demanded that the coffee house stay open day and night henceforth. To make sure this would happen, Molnár Ferenc, the leader of the group, threw the key to the café's door into the Danube River. From there, the coffee house found favor with the bohemian youth of Budapest and word of mouth soon spread to a more sophisticated social set. This drew a colorful crowd to New York Café, which soon became a veritable hub of art, culture and creativity.

Upon arrival, I was greeted and shown to my table with the waitress putting me in the chair with the best view of this beautiful room. The menu had enough variety for all diners. Every dish from each course was excellent and the waiting staff seemed to know when to discreetly remove the plates from each course. The restaurant was busy but the staff was very efficient and gentle. No wonder it is on the mention of the tourist bus as a place to stop and visit!

We stopped here for an early lunch and weren't disappointed. The venue was stunning and lived up to the rave reviews we'd read on trip advisor. There was a lovely relaxed ambience with a piano being played throughout. I would recommend the New York Burger and the Cakes. They taste as amazing as they look. The café did get quite busy, which isn't a surprise, so would suggest you either book beforehand or get their early. I really can't fault New York Café at all. Make sure you don't miss out!
